
Swagata Bhattacharyya (b. 1996, India) is a visual artist based in Kolkata, India. His work focuses on highlighting the speculative narratives of existing power structures and the multifaceted ways they shape our world. He employs a combination of drawing, photography, and CGI to create simulated worlds that explore how modes of power shape policies and influence the future through architecture, urban design, technology, and manufactured landscapes.
After completing his BFA in Painting at Rabindra Bharati University (2018) and his MVA from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara (2020), he was awarded the Inlaks Fine Arts Award (2020) and participated in the Khoj International Hybrid Residency (2021). In 2023, Bhattacharyya held a studio residency at Gästeatelier Krone in Aarau, Switzerland. His first solo exhibition, "Scenes From a Despot’s Dream", was presented at Aicon Contemporary in 2022, and was followed by prominent international screenings and exhibitions such as "Species, Soil and Successors" (Oyoun, Berlin, 2023), and his inclusion in the group presentation “Contains, Cuddles, Exalts, Or Stimulates” at Aicon Contemporary (2025).
