Sonja Larsson (b.1955, Olofström, Sweden) employs a distinctive and meditative painting practice defined by geometric layering, subtle shifts in tone, and a contemplative sense of rhythm. Larsson's practice reflects her preference of working on a larger scale, not only within the physical realm, but the philisophical as well—eager to create abstract works with plenty of room for philisophical dissection.
Having graduated from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, in 1985, Larsson's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Enköpings Konsthall, Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum, Västerås Konstmuseum, Galerie Aronowitsch, and Cecilia Hillström Gallery, where she has exhibited regularly since 2014. In 2023, Larsson made her US debut with First Light at Aicon Contemporary, New York, and in 2024 presented Radiance, her fourth solo with Cecilia Hillström Gallery in Stockholm. Larsson's paintings have been shown at international art fairs including Art International, Istanbul; MARKET Art Fair, Stockholm; and Vienna Contemporary, Vienna. Larsson has completed numerous public commissions for institutions such as Navet, Umeå; the Rinkeby Academy; Danderyd Hospital; the Royal Institute of Technology; and the Swedish Embassy in Santiago, Chile. Her work is held in the collections of Moderna Museet, Public Art Agency Sweden, Stockholm Art Council, Lund University, Umeå University, and Region Stockholm. She is a recipient of the Liljevalchs and San Michele Scholarship (2023) and has been a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts since 2010.
