Priyantha Udagedara (b.1975, Kandy, Sri Lanka) is one of the most renowned artists and art historians in Sri Lanka, with a PHD in Philosophy in Contemporary Fine Art Practice, as well as a Masters in Contemporary Art and Design Practice from the Faculty of Arts and Design, Leeds Metropolitan University, through the President Scholarship awarded by the President's Fund, Sri Lanka, 2006.
Udagedara works with an aesthetic appeal that, from a distance, suggests subjects and imagery of a paradisiacal nature. When viewed closely, however, the intense and often disturbing nature of his subjects transform through collaged body parts and splattered paint. His water colour "Super Hybrid" series presents the same comparison of beauty and agony, featuring monster and human forms with intricate detail and color.
The artist’s work has been exhibited in two solo exhibitions at Saskia Fernando Gallery; He's also exhibited solo shows at Paradise Road Galleries Colombo, Norman Rea Gallery York, and Colorida Galeria De Arte E Design Lisbon. Udagedara has participated in group exhibitions internationally, including at Breese Little Gallery, London, The Cross Art Project, Sydney, and the Lalith Kala Academy Gallery, New Delhi.
The artist lives and works in Sri Lanka.
